Godzilla vs. Kong will be released in 2021 as a sequel to King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

A cinematic sequel is in the works.

Legends collide in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the world. The epic clash between the two titans, instigated by unseen forces, is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.

In 2024, five years after Godzilla fought and killed his extraterrestrial nemesis Ghidorah for dominance in 2019, he and Kong are currently the only active Titans on Earth. On Skull Island, its climate has become unstable due to a storm generated by Ghidorah combining with the storm cell perpetually surrounding the island, forcing Monarch to contain Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him company.

In the wake of the attack, public opinion has turned against Godzilla, who is no longer seen as a hero. Madison Russell, who is now an adult and a fan of Bernie's podcast, sees the news about Godzilla's recent attack on her school and is afraid. She is now worried. After school, she tries to talk her father, who is now the director of Monarch, into giving her a lead on the cause of Godzilla's rampage. He dismisses everything she says as he only says that creatures, like people, can change. As soon as Godzilla starts attacking, Madison asks her best friend, Josh, to help her find out who did it and find out the secrets of Apex.

Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons enlists Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their hunt for a tremendous energy source on the Hollow Earth, a subterranean realm under the Earth and home to the Titans. Nathan is cautious at first since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field inside the tunnel. After Walter discloses that Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized aircraft capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure, he eventually accepts.

Ilene Andrews, a Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother, joins Nathan on Skull Island with his plan to utilize Kong as a navigator to direct them to the energy source since Skull Island is no longer able to hold him and enable him to thrive. Ilene first rejects the task, but when Nathan convinces her that this is the only way to end Godzilla's rampage and locate Kong a new home, she agrees.

At this juncture, Jia detects Godzilla's presence via the ship's vibrations as the Titan approaches and strikes the soldiers, almost drowning Kong and the others on board. Fortunately, Nathan frees Kong by releasing his shackles, enabling him to fight Godzilla underwater long enough for him to swim to the surface and tip the barge back on its head, therefore rescuing the party from drowning. Kong rushes onto a neighboring aircraft copyright in order to confront Godzilla, who hops onboard to do battle with Kong. The two Titans trade vicious punches until Kong is able to shove Godzilla back into the water due to a distraction provided by fighter planes. Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath from under the copyright, but Kong leaps off to avoid the explosion, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and pull him into the ocean's depths, aiming to drown the Titan.

Because Godzilla has been startled by Kong's deep charges, their combat has been broken up.

Given that they cannot return Kong to Skull Island due to the cold, Nathan asks Ilene whether Kong would go down the tunnel if there are others like him. Ilene instructs Jia to ask Kong if his family is down there, causing the Titan to enter and the teams to follow in their HEAVs.

The plan of Walter to use the Hollow Earth's energy to defeat Mechagodzilla is then revealed. After seeing that Mechagodzilla is the true culprit, Madison discovers that Apex is attempting to replace the Titans with humans in order to take over as Earth's dominant species. Mechagodzilla's biological supercomputer and cockpit was acquired by Apex from Alan Jonah five years ago after it was bitten off by Godzilla during his battle with Ghidorah and is now a skull that Madison and the others stumble upon while trying to find an exit. Ren is sitting inside the severed head of Ghidorah.

Kong and Godzilla both recuperate and regain their feeting, with Godzilla on the lookout for Kong, who has taken refuge atop a tower. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point where he ambushes him from above and attempts to strangle him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slashing him with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong's attempts to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong restrained and held down, Godzilla roars violently at his adversary in a display of power, while Kong, beaten, angrily roars in defiance of Godzilla.

Kong is saved by Godzilla, who spares his rival's life before walking away, leaving him with a commotio cordis that ultimately causes him to go into convulsions.

Meanwhile, Josh and Bernie attempt to remotely disable the rogue robot, and Madison calls Mark for assistance, as Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight, with Godzilla gaining the upper hand and scorching him. The three approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices his pulse is fading while Mechagodzilla continues to pummel Godzilla. They can't produce a big enough charge to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan remembers Maia's earlier comment about the HEAVs producing enough power to power Las Vegas for a week, so he flies the last HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a huge electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

The robot Mechagodzilla is about to fire a red energy beam down Godzilla's neck when Kong dives on top of the robot and deflect the beam into the air, thereby saving Godzilla's life. Following the realization that King Kong saved his life and realizing that he is not an adversary, Godzilla joins forces with King Kong to battle against the mechanized monster Mechagodzilla.

The two Titans work together to change the tide, but the robot outsmarts them and defeats them. Kong reclaims his axe from the ruins after losing it during his previous encounter with Godzilla, and strikes numerous blows on Mechagodzilla, but his weapon has lost its charge, and his weapon is worthless against the robot, which seeks to kill Kong with its tail drill. All appears lost for Kong and Godzilla, while Bernie, recognizing he and the others have no choice but to drink, takes out a flask of bourbon and suggests they all have a drink. Josh, however, rips the flask from Bernie's grip and short-circuits Mechagodzilla's controls by dumping the contents of the drink all over the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt for a brief while, allowing Godzilla and Kong to regroup and reclaim the upper hand.
